An evening with Mountaineer Nigel Vardy

Nigel Vardy (otherwise known as “Mr Frostbite”) is a record breaking mountaineer, speaker and author.  In 1999, he suffered severe frostbite climbing on Mt McKinley in Alaska. After 3 years recovering, Nigel has taken part in over 20 cross-world expeditions, set British records, and written 2 books.

Nigel will give a captivating talk about his adventures and there will be a expedition presentation from a Duke of Edinburgh Team.

There will also be stands from our County Climbing and Watersports Teams together with a licence bar and raffle.

All funds raised will go towards the Mountain Heritage Trust.

About Nigel Vardy

In 1999, Nigel suffered severe frostbite climbing on Mt McKinley in Alaska, leading to horrendous amputations of his fingers, toes and nose. Nigel endured some of the hardest days of his life as he watched the extremities of his body die. “Those tiny things suddenly became so important, especially at the prospect of losing them,” he said. His niece said ‘Uncle Nigel now has feet like a teddy bear’.

After three years recovering from his injuries, Nigel returned to high altitude and climbed Island Peak in Nepal. Since then, he has taken part in over 20 cross-world expeditions, appeared on national and international TV and radio, and written extensively about his experiences.

Writing has helped his recovery and proved a source of inspiration for many people. He has written two books about his expeditions: ‘Once Bitten’ and ‘Seven Peaks – Seven Islands.’ Nigel has since also completed a British first, by climbing the highest peaks on the world’s seven largest islands.

He is however a bit of a one man disaster area. His boat once rolled and sank in a river in Borneo. He has suffered appendicitis on the Greenland Ice cap, had a rope snap while abseiling in the Himalayas and he was recently reported missing in an Himalayan avalanche!
